Anxiety
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is the body’s natural response to situations that feel stressful, uncertain, dangerous, or overwhelming. It can show up as worry, nervousness, racing thoughts, restlessness, or physical symptoms such as a fast heartbeat and muscle tension.
In many situations, temporary anxiety can actually be helpful. It may encourage you to stay focused, alert, and prepared during important moments or challenging experiences. When managed well, this type of anxiety is usually short-term and fades once the situation passes.
Common Situations That Can Trigger Anxiety
Certain life events may naturally cause feelings of anxiety, including:
- Starting a new job
- Speaking in front of a group
- Taking an important exam
- Attending a major family event
- Navigating a big life transition
When Anxiety Becomes Unhealthy
While occasional anxiety is normal, persistent or intense anxiety can begin to interfere with daily life and emotional well-being. Constant worry, fear, or physical tension may make it difficult to focus, sleep, work, maintain relationships, or feel present in everyday activities.
When anxiety becomes overwhelming or long-lasting, professional support can help you better understand your experiences, develop healthy coping tools, and begin feeling more grounded and supported again.
What Causes Anxiety?
Anxiety can develop from a combination of genetic, emotional, environmental, and life-related factors. While occasional stress is a normal part of life, ongoing anxiety may grow when stressors become overwhelming or remain unresolved over time.
Some common contributors to unhealthy anxiety include:
- Increased stress and responsibilities at work, school, or home
- Experiencing trauma, grief, or difficult life events
- Chronic medical conditions or ongoing health concerns
- Side effects from certain medications
- Family history of anxiety or other mental health conditions
- Past emotional experiences that shaped feelings of fear or insecurity
Living in a Constant State of Rush
Modern life often keeps us moving from one responsibility to the next. Many people feel pressured to stay productive, prepare for the future, and constantly keep up with life’s demands.
Over time, this constant state of urgency can leave little room to rest, process emotions, or care for ourselves.
You may find yourself:
- Overthinking future situations
- Struggling to relax or sleep
- Feeling emotionally exhausted
- Ignoring your own needs
- Constantly worrying about “what if” scenarios
When anxiety begins to control your thoughts and decisions, life can start to feel more like survival than living.
Some people try to push through anxiety by telling themselves to “just get over it,” while others cope through avoidance, overworking, emotional eating, drinking, or other numbing behaviors. Unfortunately, untreated anxiety often becomes more intense over time and may begin affecting work, relationships, daily responsibilities, and overall well-being.
The good news is that support is available, and healing is possible.

What Is Therapy for Anxiety?
Therapy for anxiety is a supportive and collaborative process that helps individuals better understand their thoughts, emotions, triggers, and coping patterns. During therapy sessions, you work with a licensed therapist to explore the root causes of anxiety and develop healthier ways to respond to stress and emotional overwhelm.
Anxiety Therapy Can Help You:
- Better understand yourself and your emotional patterns
- Challenge unhelpful thoughts and limiting beliefs
- Learn grounding and coping techniques
- Build self-awareness and self-compassion
- Feel more emotionally balanced and present
- Develop healthier ways to navigate stress and uncertainty
The goal of therapy is not to “fix” you or eliminate every anxious feeling. Instead, therapy helps you understand where anxiety may be coming from while giving you evidence-based tools to manage it with greater confidence, safety, and compassion.
